All Day Celebration (Read-a-thon) - Monday 29th October

Children need to dress up as their favourite character and bring a cushion, bean-bag or deck chair so they can be comfortable for our all day Reading celebration. Remember your hats & water bottles.

Parents are welcome to come along for the day/part of the day - remember to bring along something comfortable to sit on too.

We will start the day with Sir Readalot, then go into a parade of the costumes and a 'Guess the character' competition.

Just a reminder that we still have until this date to get sponsorship - our goal is $20,000.  The students are so involved in the Reading but we just need to keep pushing hard with the sponsors - just think if we averaged around $50.00 sponsorship per child we would get there:)

The Great Stick Your Head in a Book Athon!

GHS Readathon
October 15-29

In memory of Margaret Mahy the big fundraiser for Gulf Harbour School this year is a Readathon - “The Great Stick Your Head in a Book- Athon.

Money from this event will buy new books for classrooms and ICT equipment for students.  Another aim is to encourage and promote reading for pleasure – so we see this is a win, win!

The Readathon will take place over a two-week period at the start of next term October 15-29. We have a school wide goal of reading 200,000 pages during this time.  If we reach our goal we will celebrate together in style with a whole school banana split!

Please help your child or children to collect as many sponsors as they can – every little bit helps.

Next term have fun reading together and encouraging them to read as we head towards our goal of 200,000 pages.

Thank-you for your help and for the energy we hope you will put into this.

Cake sale with a ROAR!

Next Thursday (23rd August) room's 25 and 30 are holding a cake sale to raise money for an animal shelter in Matakana called the Sanctuary.  The owners, Michael and Shawn care for injured, abused and neglected animals and native birds. It truly is a haven that aims to provide a safe, happy, and caring home for all types of animals.

A gold coin donation is all it'll cost for children to buy animal themed, environmentally friendly and tasty cakes.  All monies raised will go towards caring for and feeding the animals at the Sanctuary.

Please help support this worthwhile charity.

Another delicious idea from Mr. Widdowson and Miss Clark.

Say cheese (and butter) and help protect NZ's Yellow-eyed Penguin

Another neat fundraiser idea this time for Mainland cheese who are raising funds for the Yellow-eyed Penguin.
Simply collect barcodes from Mainland cheese and butter packets, attach them to a specially designed wall chart (which are in your child's classroom) and Mainland will contribute $1 to the Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust.
This is a wonderful opportunity to help protect an endangered native bird who needs our help!
Be mellow, be yellow and support the Yellow-eyed Penguin!

Reporting for Students in Years 1 - 3

There have been some significant changes to the way that student progress and achievement is reported on for children who are in the first three years of their primary school education.

Rather than reporting mid year and end of year, schools are now required to report to parents after the child has been at school one year, after two years and after three years.

As these anniversaries occur at different times during the school year, depending on the child, this raises some logistical issues for implementing the reporting process.  Teachers in Years 1 - 3 have clustered students whose anniversaries fall around the same time and will report on them throughout that term.  Your child’s teacher will communicate the dates and times of your child’s interviews.

If you have any queries with regards to the reporting of your child please feel free to talk to your child’s teacher.

Stranger Danger

There has been an approach made on a student recently which,  though nothing untoward occurred was unsettling. It would seem a number of students are cutting through the bush at the end of Alec Craig Way which goes through the Golf Course and emerges by the Wentworth Gym.

If your child travels this way it might be wise to review this with them. Encourage them to stay on the main pathways and always walk home with friends.
